Judge’s Report for the second quarter’s competition 2013 from Steph Patterson

All entries were of a very high quality, which made choosing the top three challenging. The stories varied from humorous to dark, from light to serious and thought-provoking. I was moved by stories of loss, grieving and child abuse, intrigued by dramatic thrillers with unexpected twists, and entertained by the lighter submissions.

The submissions show a talented range of experienced and new writers on the scene.

1st: Veiled Shadows

Brilliant, gripping, child, lonely, help — this is a brilliant, moving story that raises questions. A cry for help going unnoticed. A shocking twist, showing the mother’s desperation and ignorance and the child’s helplessness.

2nd: Hair

Powerful, emotional, loss, grieving, envy — a very moving and emotional story. A powerful tale of fate, loss and envy. It made me cry.

3rd: Spirit Song

Unusual, emotional, warm, surprising — a warm, unusual story. It moved me when I read it. It has an air of esoteric.

Highly Commended: All the Right Words

Thriller, drama, fast pace, gripping, great twist — a slow build-up leads to an expected end. A brilliant twist. Totally unexpected.

We now regularly receive several hundred entries each quarter, so those making the long and short lists should feel very proud.
