Sheila Bugler grew up in a small town in the west of Ireland. After studying Psychology at University College Galway, she left Ireland and worked in Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland, Argentina and London, before finally settling in Eastbourne.

In 2008, she was one of four writers to be offered a place on the Arts Council-funded Apprenticeships in Fiction programme. Since then, her writing has been shortlisted for several prizes, including the Harry Bowling Prize and the Yeovil Literary Prize.

Her first novel, Hunting Shadows was published in August 2013 to widespread acclaim. The crime novelist Ken Bruen described the novel as 'a tour de force', comparing Sheila's writing to AM Homes and Anne Tyler. The influential crime fiction website, Crimesquad, chose Sheila for their Fresh Blood focus in October 2013 and described the novel as 'a big hit of narcotics, but in paper form.' Hunting Shadows was followed by The Waiting Game and All Things Nice.
