Judge’s Report from Steph Patterson senior editor at Crooked Cat Publishing

I am honoured to judge the popular Flash 500 Novel Openings competition again this year. A big thank you goes to Lorraine Mace for the opportunity.

The excerpts I have had the pleasure of reading are fascinating, engaging novel openings with intriguing hooks. They were all very different from each other, in style as well as in genre and plot. I enjoyed the wide variety of writing: from literary fiction to crime thrillers, moving contemporary fiction, mysteries to historical and SciFi genres. I found the imagination of the authors incredible – and, at times, even scary!

It was a difficult choice, as the novel openings were of a high quality throughout, and I wish all those who submitted much success with publishing their novels.

The first place goes to Alt, a gripping thriller about a ritualistic murder set in the chilly north. The beginning drew me in with its fast pace, brief, clear description and swift action.

There are in fact two runners-up:

The Paper Crane boasts an intriguing plot. Its opening chapter drew me straight into a fascinating story.

In Your Image has a slightly controversial plot, but it is well thought-out, and the beginning had me hooked right away.

My congratulations to the winner and the runners-up. Very well done!
